ABOUT THE AUTHOR
It was
Deborah's destiny to become a writer though she didn't realise it till she was
in her thirties. Fate began invading her consciousness as a teenager. After
any event occurred in her young life, she would turn to her family and friends
and say, "That's another chapter for my book!"
She didn't
appreciate the guidance at that age and so began working as a stenographer, then
Executive PA. In these roles it was soon evident though that writing was her
passion and power. She began drafting internal and external communications for
her supervisors then wrote press releases for media distribution before
undergoing extra curricular writing courses.
Her
creative mind was searching for a way to emerge full throttle when she started
working in the film/distribution industry. These dream jobs in her twenties
weren't enough to satisfy her thirst for new horizons and adventures at the time
though, but they did give her confidence in her creative abilities. Several of
her creative writing pieces remaining to this day on video slicks and movie
trailers.
Over the
next ten years she went from job to job before escaping to the serene and safe
environment of her home as a freelance Marketing and PR Consultant.
In between
contracts she would write of faraway places and endeavoured to create love
stories spanning time and space but her first novel remained elusive till she
eventually moved to the beachside town of Port Macquarie.
Here she
finally found the time and creative urge too much to ignore and she began
writing her first novel, ‘The Emerald Tablets’. It took twelve months to
complete and she is now working on her second novel.
Writing

Chapter 1
erodotus stood mesmerised by the
key. He couldn’t take his eyes away from it as it slowly spun round and round in
the emerald plinth. He’d succeeded in closing the door to the underworld. In
doing so he’d enabled the energy to flow through the matrix again, igniting the
power of the Emerald Tablets and the protection of the twelve portals to
otherworlds.
Lights flashed every which way
around the walls, ceiling and through him. Oceans, deserts, volcanoes and
forests full of lush trees appeared before him as if in a picture book. Waves
crashed along sandy shores, birds flew above him, people with smiling faces
reached out to him. He was captivated, unable to move inside a spinning wheel of
lights and pictures.
Irisia had tried to explain the
significance of the key and why they had to return it. Thoth, the messenger of
the ancient gods had frustrated himself trying to convince Herodotus of the
power of the Emerald Tablets and the portals that day back in Pericle’s library
but he hadn’t understood any of it till now.
He fell to his knees as the
holograms of the Emerald Tablets that protected the portals circled him for the
last time, then slowly, one at a time they disappeared behind the key, finally
closing and locking it in place again for all-time.
The lights disappeared and the room
returned to normal. Just four walls, a ceiling and a floor of sand. The door to
Hell was locked, his adrenalin rush fading fast.
He closed his eyes and hoped it was
all a dream but he knew the ache in his heart was real and she wasn’t coming
back. Irisia had paid the highest price for joining him on this journey. His
knees gave way under him and he fell, his buttocks landing on the soft sand as
memories of the past few months came flooding back.
In one day, his whole life was
turned upside down but he wouldn’t change it for anything.
He’d been transcribing ancient
scrolls that described Emerald Tablets, doorways to otherworlds, places where
dreams came true and destinies were fulfilled, written by the God Thoth himself
over a thousand years ago when a knock on his door surprised him.
As he walked towards it, a gust of
wind had blown him off his feet. The room filled with smoke and haze. He’d
thought the room was on fire when a black and purple swirling mass appeared
before him, taller than a man, wider than a carriage. He couldn’t move, couldn’t
take his eyes away from it.
A man’s voice boomed out calling
his name snapping him out of his trance-like state. Herodotus closed and opened
his eyes several times thinking he was dreaming, but then three men stood before
him.
One man almost 7 foot tall and the
other two were thin as boards. One had the head of a frog and the other the head
of an asp. They were one dimension, had no depth, they weren’t shapeless, just
had no body weight at all. Herodotus fell back, almost tripping over as he tried
to get away from the figures slowly moving towards him.
The tall man in the middle seemed
more normal than the other two but he had the head of a bird and something
floating just above him. Something round, that Herodotus thought was an angel’s
halo, resting just above his head.
As the man got closer to him
Herodotus realised it was a red disc with wings spread open, just like the
drawings Herodotus had idolised on the walls of the Halicarnassus museum as a
child.
Those drawings spoke to him way
back when he was growing up. He would, whenever possible, sneak into the museum
after closing time and walk around for hours just looking at them. Now one of
those drawings stood, larger than life in front of him.
The one person Herodotus had wanted
to believe in. It was Thoth; he couldn’t believe it, Thoth, the messenger of all
the gods, in the flesh asking him for help.
Herodotus had been spellbound as
Thoth explained how they had created life on earth thousands of years ago. How
the Emerald Tablets had been created and spread around the earth, the twelve
portals hidden from sight above and below the earth’s surface. Herodotus had
just been reading about how they evened out the variable weights of landmass and
ocean. How the earth remains stable and gravity consistent as it revolves
efficiently around the sun. These Tablets gave sunshine to parts of the world
that had only seen darkness before.
Where once there were only small
creatures living aimless existences, plants grew and animals evolved. It didn’t
happen overnight, nature responded to the shifting weights and eventually
erupted in all its glory all round the world and the ice age happened. Many
living things died but humans evolved.
