Chapter One

The secret

It was during my training as a nurse in my early twenties that I first became interested in the relationship which appeared to exist between the ageing process, how people felt about their body, and the way they treated it. I was fascinated by the number of middle-aged people in the hospital who were there for a myriad of illness and disease.

Many of these patients were overweight, complained of having no energy and looked years older than their birth certificates stated. This made me wonder if all people aged at the same rate and was this what I had to look forward to.

It seemed like a daunting prospect in the not-so-distant future and led me to research the lifestyles of people living in different parts of the world. I became fascinated by the reported longevity readily experienced by remote groups of people, such as those living in the Hunza Valley in Pakistan, Tibetan Mountains in China, Peruvian Mountains and certain pockets in what was the Soviet Union. (1)

These people all had a simple existence, eating natural foods grown from the water of what is known as glacial milk, which is rich in minerals and vitamins. It was not uncommon for them to live to 120-140 years without the debilitating effects of diseases such as cardiac disorders, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s and cancers, which seems to plague people in western countries. Their bodies didn’t seem to wear out as readily as the people in western countries. Other influences also contributed to their longevity, such as the fact that they did not have the same pollution, stress, chemicals and preservatives in their foods, toxic personal care products and electro-magnetic frequencies to contend with.

I started to wonder if these people who lived to 120 or more years thought of themselves as ‘middle aged’ when they reach 40 or 50. I had a nagging suspicion they didn’t. Perhaps at 40 or 50 they still felt young and looked forward to a long life where they could do the things they expect to do. On the other hand, it seems that many people in western countries expect their body to have worn out to a certain extent and possibly have some sort of disease which limits their life in some way.

The other factor relates to the law of attraction, which simply states that like attracts like and as human beings we tend to attract what we think about. Our minds are extremely powerful and the manner in which we think and see ourselves has a bearing on our physical appearance and health. The power of our mind can have us feeling and looking younger than we are, staying healthier and even has been reported to assist in overcoming disease, such as cancer.

Therefore I was presented with the choice of making the correct lifestyle decisions to spend the next ‘X’ number of years staying as young and feeling as fit and healthy as I could and keep doing the things I wanted to do. After all, it was commonsense, if I only had one body without the possibility of a trade-in replacement, it was worth taking care of the one I have.

This led to adopting simple lifestyle choices which have become a way of life over the last 20 years. They include eating organic natural foods and limiting the additives and preservatives found readily in processed foods; drinking an adequate amount of water and regularly taking minerals and vitamins in a balanced formula; trying to avoid harmful toxins and chemicals found in personal care products; daily meditation, a simple exercise regimen and adequate sleep; living and working in an environment which is pleasant and reasonably stress free; being aware of the direct overexposure to the sun and contact with electro-magnetic frequencies.

Over the last 20 years there have been minimal visits to the doctor due to illness. When I first adopted these choices any aches and pains I had disappeared, my varicose veins didn’t bother me anymore and the carpal tunnel surgery was no longer necessary. On my last check-up the doctor said he would gladly exchange my low cholesterol level and blood pressure for his own. I have stayed slim without trying to do so. I genuinely still feel young and look forward to many years of doing the things I enjoy. It’s also nice to have greater choice when purchasing clothes and to be frequently told I look younger than I am.

Over the years many people, including friends, have asked why I felt healthier, had more energy and looked younger than they did. It was as though they were being told about a secret when I outlined the simple life choices which were also available to them.

What struck me as interesting was that these people thought how great it would be to look younger and feel better, but they had very little idea of how to achieve this. Their normal conversation of which diet they would try next, how tired and lacking in energy they were and how they felt old, changed to genuinely wanting to know what I was doing that was different to their way of life. The following chapters outline the simple life choices which I have followed and the benefits you can also expect.
