Samuel the Lion
Samuel
was a baby lion. He lived with his mother. They were part of a circus act. They
did not have a very big home, just a small cage to rest in. But
as long as Samuel was with his Mummy, he was happy. They
had an act in the circus, which made people very happy. Samuel loved to make
people laugh. He
had many friends in the circus; Manta the elephant and his sister Sharma… she
was a smaller elephant. They would call across to each other at night, talking
to each other. There
were many beautiful horses; dancing horses. The
ballerina would ride on their backs for the big parade. One
night before the show began, Samuel’s mother felt very sick. The people from
the circus came to look at her. “She
can not perform tonight,” said one man. “The
baby lion will have to go on his own tonight,” said another man. “Oh
no,” thought Samuel, “l could not possibly do that.” “Don’t
worry son,” said Samuel’s mother, “ You will do just fine.” Just
then they came to round up all the performers, Samuel
was very nervous. When
they were all lined up out the back of the big tent, Manta the elephant, rubbed
his trunk up against Samuel, to show him he cared about him. Sharna
the sister elephant came and stood beside them. When
it was time to move into the ring, Manta and Sharna escorted Samuel into the big
top. They nudged him forward to his trainer, with their trunks. Off
he went, performing for the people, jumping through hoops, rolling a big ball,
rolling over on command, and lots of other little tricks. The
crowd went wild, clapping and laughing, it made Samuel feel so special. He loved
the feeling of making so many people happy. It
was a magical night, so colourful and happy, everybody laughing. Samuel knew
then, that this was what he always wanted to do. When
the show was finished, he could not wait to see if his Mother was all right. She
was fine, and waiting for him. “Did
you enjoy yourself son?” said Mother Lion. “Oh,
l had a wonderful time,” said Samuel. “l
want to do this for the rest of my life.” The moral of this story is…
To give to others,
gives much pleasure to ourselves.
