CHINA CHALKIE

china chalkie

China Chalkie is the story of a couple of retired professionals determined to achieve something more meaningful in their twilight years than improving the golf handicap and who took on the challenge of teaching English as a second language in China between 2008 and 2011.

It is a memoir/travelogue which describes the process of equipping oneself for the task of teaching English in a foreign country as well as taking the journey with my husband and I as we experience the cultural differences, the exciting scenery and the day to day frustrations of living in the fascinating and rapidly changing country which is China while at the same time retaining our sense of humour.

Apart from recounting our travels, work and the people we met along the way, the book contains many hints and resources for anyone who is thinking of undertaking a similar exercise or for anyone with an interest in China for any reason at all.  I think you will find this book valuable and very entertaining.

Jan Curren

Biography

Jan was raised in Melbourne, Australia, and educated at St Columba's College, Essendon and Kilmaire College, Hawthorn.

She studied Radiography at RMIT while working at St Vincentís Hospital where she met her future husband.

In 1969 she married Brian Curren and soon after Brian was conscripted in National Service call up and, after completing officer training, decided to make a career of the Army. They moved to Port Moresby on posting soon after being married.

They have two sons Andrew (1970) and Stuart (1972) born in Port Moresby General Hospital.

On her return to Australia Jan resumed her Radiography career while living in Sydney over 10-year period.

The family moved to Canberra in 1983 where they continue to reside, apart from an overseas posting to San Antonio Texas between 1989 -1992.

Jan studied for Graduate Diploma in Ultrasound and moved into that field of Medical Imaging while working at the Canberra Hospital.

In 1994 she was invited to take up the position of Senior Sonographer in the Fetal Medicine Unit at that hospital where she worked until her retirement in 2006.

Now a grandmother of four and a keen golfer.

Since retiring Jan and Brian have travelled extensively and from 2008 to 2011 took on the challenge of teaching English as a Second Language in China. She always kept a journal on their various trips and it was the journal which she wrote and sent home to friends and family, from their time in China, which prompted the writing of this book. She writes of their adventures, travels and the wonderful friends made along the way with candour and humour in this, her first book.
