PAPERBACK BOOKS
BEAT SMOKING FOR LIFE

Most people who have quit smoking defeated their addiction “cold turkey” and simply stopped lighting up cigarettes. That method is by far the most successful one because it represents a huge amount of determination and perseverance.
Even a powerful drug like nicotine cannot withstand such a tenacious confrontation. But not every smoker is able to simply take a deep breath and quit. It takes a certain characteristics and a high level of mental fortitude or tenacity. Perfect timing can also make it possible.

This book will encourage a new attitude and enhance your ability to deep-freeze the turkey. It is designed to convince you that there is absolutely no reason to smoke and how unfounded is the delusion that you cannot stop.
People react to advice in different ways and different personalities require an appropriate approach. Therefore, several alternative strategies are presented which should cater for most readers. But no matter which method works for you, you can expect this book to be of enormous assistance if you just let it.
Please remember this, if you do not change anything then nothing will change.

WE HAVE LIFT OFF

Congratulations. You have taken the first step to freedom from smoking. So how can this book help you to beat the most addictive drug on this planet? Will scare tactics be employed that will shock you and cause you to refuse your next cigarette? No. Although some aspects of smoking are frightening and horrifying presenting them is purely coincidental. Is the writer a psychiatrist or a doctor? Does he possess a stronger will than you? I doubt it.

So what qualifies him to lecture on this particular subject?

He was a heavy smoker but overcame the habit and permanently!

To understand a smoker one needs to have “been there” and experienced the burden of being hooked and the exhilaration of being free. Will it succeed? Very likely. A lady whose original objective was to edit the grammar in the draft manuscript coincidentally has not smoked since. Surely, if the author can overcome his habit of smoking more than 50 cigarettes a day he can offer help to other victims by divulging his thoughts on the subject. Often, the “experts” have very little credibility when preaching on a topic because they lack life experience. Such as the celibate person telling us about sex, or the radio announcer or movie star who appear to know everything about everything.

One constructive criticism of the proposed publication was “It’s been done before”. So, although difficult to find, I bought and borrowed books pertaining to the same subject. I discovered that those well-intended compilations are very different to this one. Some are very good reading but seemed to be much too long with lots of anecdotes, statistics and advice but with no lasting influence on the reader’s attitude and badly lacking a discernible step-by-step method of beating the habit.

By the time you had finished reading certain books, you would have forgotten the purpose of the exercise and smoked a couple of cartons of cigarettes. Others are too short to be effective and are really only brochures. And interestingly the people who loaned me the books are still heavy smokers! It would appear that most techniques are failing, so I persevered and followed up with observations, questions, investigations and many hours of study.

As a result, I now have a much better understanding of the subject and I am hereby passing on this knowledge to the reader, which will explain how smoking is harming them and recommend adequate ways to fix their problem.

This is a unique, in depth approach. Many smokers would be completely unaware of some research findings pertaining to cigarettes and to alternatives. An attempt has been made to make the book entertaining but it is not a novel and it should be looked upon in the context of self-help and rehabilitation.

You will learn that we can survive only FOUR minutes without oxygen, only FOUR days without water, only about FOUR weeks without food but FOREVER without cigarettes. There are sections that you will be asked to read more than once for emphasis. If you follow that advice and re-read those sections, you could save your life or at least extend it for many years. You are already well on the way to being cured because you obviously want to stop.

Please read the book slowly and seriously. A lot of effort has been put into it for your benefit. It contains personal experiences, interviews, interpretations and even a few Biblical excerpts. And although smoking is not a humorous matter, and many smokers cannot laugh without coughing, some jokes have been included to moderate the gloominess of a very serious matter.

The most successful way to fix a social disease is usually via education, so you should do yourself a favour and read the technical sections. It is not necessary for you to memorise any of the details. However, there is new information available about aspects of smoking that could completely change your perspective. Several diseases recently added to the long list already attributed to smoking are presented. Every conceivable angle is pursued to expose the deceit and enlighten the gullible.

A section dedicated to females has been included. If you are a female, you might be interested to learn that teenage girls are adopting the smoking habit at a greater rate than the boys and that the fair gender is much more vulnerable to certain smoking related diseases and abnormalities than their male counterparts are. And because smoking mothers are contaminating their foetuses and then their babies with smoke, female parents have a duty of care that they might not have considered. Not due to negligence but to ignorance of the dangers.

Although you know, and I know and everyone knows that you do not need that next cigarette, getting you to do something about it is the tricky part. All the written word can do is give you reasons to quit that you have not previously considered and plausible enough for you to at least give it a try.

A long journey always begins with one small step. If you can somehow be persuaded to take that first step towards freedom from nicotine you will be amazed just how easy it really is. And time is on your side because every minute you resist smoking makes the next minute less stressful than the previous one. But you cannot expect to simply browse through this book and automatically quit. You should decide to form a joint venture with the author and agree to use the contents as weapons and tools to your best advantage.

Critics say that smokers do not like being insulted or threatened and if coerced in any way they will rebel and refuse to quit. This is absolutely correct because they are incessantly searching for any feeble excuse to justify that next cigarette. Nevertheless, they do need to be convincingly and emphatically informed just how irrational and unsociable this hazardous habit really is. Otherwise nothing will change and they will blissfully continue to rationalise their unnatural behaviour and desperately invent reasons to continue smoking.

At times the readers will be criticised, ridiculed, castigated and they could even be offended by some comments about his or her behaviour, but if any approach can invigorate their desire to defeat the habit, the mission will have been accomplished and no apology will be warranted. Furthermore, every observation was once applicable to the author. Then you will need reasons to stop and there are many from which to choose. Your health, your children, your relatives, your friends, your job, your self-esteem, your smell, your breath, your appearance and the huge cost.

Listing the reasons to continue smoking is impossible. The are none. Also, the world of litigation is reaching the stage where a relative, a workmate or a passenger in your car could sue you if they are adversely affected by passively smoking your exhaled and sidestream smoke. Children are now able to sue their smoking parents if they develop conditions resulting from passive smoke.

If you decided to lose weight, wouldn’t you ask advice from someone who had succeeded in slimming? And if you did not have the willpower or self-discipline to participate in exercise you might employ a personal trainer who is experienced and has a rigid plan to follow. But it is a waste of time and money employing such an expert if you treat their instructions with contempt.

When the trainer says, “Jump”, you should ask, “How high?” You need to imagine that the writer of this book is your mentor, coach, personal trainer, your friend and then to pretend that these services are very expensive. Then you should implement as many of his suggestions as possible in order to make your investment worthwhile. You will not be asked to do push-ups, run for miles or to eat different food. You will only be asked not to do something. And if millions of smokers can quit there is no reason why many more cannot. But wishing and hoping are not appropriate ingredients for fixing the problem.

Your “mission impossible” should you choose to accept it, is to follow the instructions that will enable you to disarm this chemical and biological weapon of mass destruction by cutting the correct wire in the electronic detonator. As prerequisites for beating your habit you need to acknowledge the fact that you are not really happy with your lifestyle and that you do want to change it. Accept the things you cannot change, change the things you cannot accept, and have the wisdom to tell the difference. Wisdom could be defined as “doing today what will make tomorrow better.” This lifestyle is not really acceptable and can be modified.

As a result of research I am now able to explain why you smoke and why you believe that quitting is just too hard. I strongly believe that you can be convinced that you can stop, then how to stop followed by suggestions how to enjoy freedom and quit forever. However, I will need your full co-operation if we are to eradicate this temporary problem.

A man was driving with a penguin as a passenger in his car.

The police stopped the driver and ordered him to take the penguin to the zoo.

He immediately took it to the zoo. They both enjoyed the zoo so much that the next day the man took the penguin to the beach.

Modifying someone else’s way of thinking can never be easy, but subconsciously you would prefer to overcome your compulsive disorder. And it can be achieved if the information presented to you is believable and convincing enough to outweigh your existing irrational misconceptions.  As the song goes, try to see it my way. Parents have read sections to their children hoping that it contains some magic words that will enable the kids to resist the peer pressures to smoke. And it probably does. Similarly I’m hoping that your “enough is enough” button can be pressed.

As you are probably aware, most people who have quit smoking defeated their addiction “cold turkey” and simply stopped lighting up cigarettes. That method is by far the most successful one because it represents a huge amount of determination and perseverance. Even a powerful drug like nicotine cannot withstand such a tenacious confrontation. But not every smoker is able to simply take a deep breath and quit.  I placed an advertisement in the personal columns of a paper, stating “Wanted, attractive professional lady who owns a boat, view to a permanent relationship. Please send a picture of the boat.”
