APHRODITE - FOOD FOR THE GODDESS WITHIN

We know our bodies respond best to food in its natural state or as close to it as possible. Supermarkets today offer several hundred thousand items for sale, most are highly processed products with labelled ingredients that many of us do not fully understand.

There are more low-fat products available than ever before, yet we are experiencing a global obesity epidemic.

In response to obesity, food manufacturers have replaced the fat in processed foods with sugar. With misleading health messages on food packages, and continuous food advertising campaigns promoting processed foods, it is not surprising that many people are confused about what to eat.

A major challenge for this century is for people to understand how important it is for us to take the time to source healthy food and learn how to cook and combine foods to make appetizing meals that are also uncomplicated.

Aphrodite is a book that uses fresh ingredients in recipes that are easy and promote good health and longevity. The foods selected also offer gluten and lactose free cooking.

We all have the choice between living on fast food and a highly processed diet, devoid of fibre and laden with chemicals, saturated fats, salt and sugar or a diet full of food from the earth’s bounty, fresh, organic, seasonal, and unprocessed.

By following the basic principles in this book you will be able to forget about counting calories/kilojoules, deciphering complex food labelling or living with food self-denial to lose weight.

We know our bodies respond best to food in its natural state or as close to it as possible. Supermarkets today offer several hundred thousand items for sale, most are highly processed products with labeled ingredients that many of us do not fully understand. There are more low fat products available than ever before, yet we are experiencing a global obesity epidemic.

This includes selecting and preparing meals from fresh, seasonal ingredients, as well as enjoying the pleasure of eating and relaxing with conversation and music at a table set to appeal to the senses. Many people these days eat much of their food standing up, on the run, at a desk or in front of the television. Cultures boasting longevity have some things in common, including, being free from the burden of many lifestyle diseases common to Western culture. They set aside time in their day for food buying, and preparation of meals, and pre prepared and processed foods are rare in their daily diets. These cultures, many of them Mediterranean , sit down to eat their food, usually socially, in the company of others at a table laid out to enjoy and appreciate the meal. This juxtaposes against scenes of people in our city streets, seemingly sucking down highly processed fast food and drinks in vast quantities.

We have the choice between living on fast food and a highly processed diet, devoid of fiber and laden with chemicals, saturated fats, salt and sugar or a diet full of food from the earth’s bounty, fresh, organic, seasonal, and unprocessed. By following the basic principles in this book you will be able to forget about counting calories/kilojoules, deciphering complex food labeling or living with food self-denial to lose weight. There is an abundant choice of recipes using an array of fresh herbs, spices and simple cooking techniques to bring out the rich colors, textures and flavors with natural fresh organic foods. You will quickly become accustomed to the taste and benefits of eating fresh, unprocessed foods as your body responds to foods that are free from chemicals and additives. The foods in this book are rich in nutrients and most are from the Mediterranean diets such as olive oil, fiber rich cereals, fish, fruits, organic meats, eggs, vegetables, nuts, seeds, sheep and goat cheeses, yogurt and milk, fresh herbs, pulses and lentils. A change to this way of eating will also have benefits in the prevention of food related cancers, high blood pressure, diabetes Type 2, obesity and heart disease.

The effects of excess weight and health related diseases are well researched and documented. The following will assist you in a personal analysis of your body weight.

Body mass index and hip to waist ratio are the two most common methods of measuring the amount of fat people are carrying in relation to risking their health. These are good indicators of predicted conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, unhealthy weight, hypertension, abnormal blood fat levels often including high cholesterol.

Body Mass Index, BMI

A person’s weight in kilograms divided by their height in metres squared

(BMI = kg/m2)

A BMI greater than 30 usually is considered moderate to severe obesity. Be careful of fat concentration on the abdomen as this is also more likely to link with health problems associated with heart disease.

Hip to waist ratio

1. Measure waist at narrowest point

2. Measure hip at the widest point

3. Divide the waist by the hip measurement.

4. Women with waist to hip measurements of more than 0.8 or men with waist to hip measurements of more than 1.0 are apple shape and at an increased health risk due to their fat distribution.

Take charge of your health to prevent lifestyle diseases by:

Eating healthy fresh, organic food

Building exercise into your daily routine, such as walking and taking the stairs wherever possible.

Breathing correctly

Living a balanced life, we are now working some of the longest hours in the western world

Allowing time to plan and shop for meals

Take charge of your own destiny in relation to your health and enjoy the benefits throughout your life.

Use the 24 hours in each day wisely to balance your life:

8 hours for sleep

8 hours for work

8 hours for family, shopping, cooking, recreation and down time

It takes time and planning to change from a processed diet to a healthy diet. We often hang on to bad habits related to food and often use food as a reward or treat. We convince ourselves that we need and deserve these low nutritive processed foods like chips, lollies, soft drinks and biscuits. Take the time to plan your meals, prepare food shopping lists and source suppliers that stock the foods you need.

Changing habits

We all need lots of fresh fruit and vegetables each day. The recipes in this book are high in fresh organic fruit and vegetables. Lack of fresh fruit and vegetables is associated with chronic disease and obesity related problems. The World Health Organization recommends that we consume a minimum amount of 400g of fruit and vegetables each day. In Australia 2 fruits and 5 vegetables are recommended for each day.

‘Aphrodite: Food for the Goddess Within’, will help you develop healthy eating habits with:

easy recipes

fresh and minimally processed ingredients

foods promoting longevity and good health

recipes free from gluten and lactose

a good range of vegetarian dishes
